"When I imagined the interception of this mix by a sentient intergalactic being, I wondered - how do we decipher the language of music? Would the sound of a human voice be perceived as the voice of the dominant species. Or, perhaps, would the sounds of the drum machine be interpreted as the “voice?” What does voice and language mean when spoken through music? While there are major differences in the style and teachings of musical traditions around the world, the use of voice and rhythmic percussion is present across cultures and throughout history. In this context, is rhythm truly the universal language? I have always been interested in the use of voice in dance music - the way it brings an organic familiarity to a technical genre. For this mix, drew from various sources and genres - both voice-centric and rhythm-centric to weave a melodic, deep, and genre-twisted story. I recently discovered konnokal, the south Indian art of performing percussion syllables vocally, which really inspired the concept and helped me think about rhythm in a new way. The mix opens with a reverbed out recording of Sheila Chandra, an English pop star of Indian descent, performing konnokal. The mix is rhythmic, yet meant for listening and the experimental nature of this project encouraged me to use 3 CDJs and run a delay pedal through my mixer for the first time.
